in 1907, the first liquid nail polish was invented, although it was colourless. Soon thereafter, it was available in variety of different colours. In 1925, the Lunar manicure (today known as the Half-Moon manicure) was seen everywhere.
Reds and pinks were used on the nail bed while avoiding the area around the cuticles.
This was popular all the way up till the 1950's, where many started wearing block colours all over the nail! (still using the great shades).
In the 1930's however they started to also avoid the tip of the nail (as shown).
Nails were almost always painted in various shades of red, although pink, coral, mauve, rose and burgundy were also popular colours. Nail polish colours often came in a set with matching lipstick. A clear coat topped all nail polish for durability.
Today you can copy this style for an accurate look, if that is what
you're going for but you can also take creative inspiration from online. As many vintage bloggers and those on social media.
I have added photos to show how much you can do/change with it still looking incredibly vintage!!
For example instead of a half moon you can have a triangle or paint a heart. and you can chose any colour from pinks to reds, rusts/browns and purples.
The shape of the nails were generally oval or quite short (mainly for practical purposes during WW2) so having these shapes will add that classic vibe to any nail look/style. So if you are a fan of the authenticity and accuracy then I would suggest these to be the way to go.
However, If you don't care for this type of look or prefer something slightly more detailed, but still wish to include a little touch of vintage then, if you are more talented than I (or go to a salon) you can have anything from, floral patters, polka
dots, stripes to pastel colours (or any colours of that matter). so the options are pretty much endless!!!
And you can also chose any nail shape you want.
You can find a lot of different tutorials and styles online now so it wont be hard to find you favourite and give it a go!! But be sure to match your polish to your lipstick!
(here is a little tutorial I found to get you started!)
