These are a few of my favourite TV shows to indulge in some history drama and fun! I have put with each show a brief summary of the show and a trailer clip. Why I love them will be pretty self explanatory.
The Crown (2016-)
Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) from the
1940s to modern times. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI. As the decades pass, personal intrigues, romances, and political rivalries are revealed that played a big role in events that shaped the later years of the 20th century.
Victoria (2016-)
This eight-part drama features an all-star cast including Jenna Coleman as a young
Queen Victoria and Tom Hughes as Prince Albert. The monarch's life is chronicled as the story begins with the death of King William IV in 1837, her accession to the throne at the tender age of 18 and her relationships with the influential forces around her. With the advice of the prime minister Lord Melbourne and the support of her husband Prince Albert the young queen flourishes and establishes herself in her newfound role. I am so captivated with this series while a 3 season is in the making I feel I should share this now! The charters are more than easy relate to. With Victoria being suddenly pushed into a role and having everyone around her believing the is less than ready, and Albert who is a fish out of water, in a whole new country trying to fit in as best he can and make friends/allies.
Downton Abbey (2010-2016)
This British drama series follows the lives of the Crawley family and
its servants in the family's classic Georgian country house. The series begins with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, which leaves Downton Abbey's future in jeopardy, since the presumptive heirs of Robert, Earl of Grantham -- his cousin James, and James' son, Patrick -- die in the catastrophe, leaving the family without a male offspring to take over Downton when the current lord dies. The point is important since Lord Grantham's children are daughters -- Ladies Mary, Edith and Sybil, but the facets of their lives and of those of the below-stairs staff -- also a highly regimented world -- have fascinating story lines. I love this Series as it doesn't just show the glamour and their prestige but also the lower class living and 'real world'. I cannot recommend this series enough it is perfect for a weekend binge with great characters full of comedy as well as the history of WW1 and female rights movement to name a few.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
While the arrival of wealthy gentlemen sends her marriage-minded mother into a frenzy, willful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet matches wits with haughty Mr. Darcy. A dramatization of Jane Austen's novel. this is the most accurate interpritations of the book as it is a series so includes the entire book and all characters, I love this series because being made in 1995 it gives a heightened feel to this beautiful classic by the BBC . Although the trailer does little justice to this amazing series I still included it. The series is available on netflix and youtube (netflix showing the best quality).
Band of Brothers (2001)
This series, originally broadcast on HBO, tells the story of Easy Company, 506th
Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Based on interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers' journals and letters, this 10-part series chronicles the experiences of these young men who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. Based on the book written by Stephen Ambrose. I really enjoy watching this as it gives an insight to what our men went through during WW1 and WW2 and really any war! and the bonds they created. you can watch this online and on Netflix
Drunk History (2015-)
Drunken comedians teach history lessons. This is such a laugh a really good watch! especially is like myself you did history in school, seeing a drunk explain King Henry 7th choosing one of his many wives. There is not a way to explain how glorious this is so give it a watch on comedy central!
Interesting!
